Loss of sensation, all manner of peculiar sensations or even paralysis could be your lot; temporarily whilst the nerves repair or permanently if they can’t. In short, nerve damage can be life changing and at the very least make life more complicated to navigate.

Nerve Damage – a brief anatomy lesson

There are three types of nerves found within the miracle of evolution that is the human body; they are:

    • Autonomic nerves which stimulate automatic or semi-automatic functions in the body such as heart function and respiration. If these are damaged you could lose the ability to sense internal pain such as an angina attack, you might be subject to excessive sweating, light headedness, dry mouth and eyes, digestive tract, bladder or sexual dysfunction.

    • Motor nerves which carry messages from the brain to the body about physical movement. Experience damage to motor nerves and paralysis, muscle wastage, twitching and localised weakness and reduced responsiveness could result.

    • Sensory nerves which allow you to feel sensations from the outside world. Damage to this type of nerve could result in numbness or heightened sensitivity or produce tingling or burning sensations, any or all of which symptoms could well negatively impact your positional awareness.

    How are nerves damaged?

Medical negligence – for instance when drugs are injected too close to or into a nerve or due to poor technique in delivering a baby when the brachial plexus nerves can be harmed or due to syringe needles damaging nerves when extracting blood, or when a patient’s body is miss-positioned during an operation resulting in prolonged compression of nerves or the nerves being starved of oxygen.

    • Road traffic accidents – causing nerve damage to due to blunt or sharp trauma, compression, stretching and torsional injuries.

    • Workplace accidents – resulting in much the same injuries as road traffic accidents but providing a much larger palette of causes, such as falling from height, manual handling and accidents involving vehicles and machinery.

    • Sports related accidents – which at their most extreme can leave their victims extensively and permanently paralysed. Dutch racing cyclist Joop Zoetemelk suffered nerve damage as a result of a crash which completely and permanently deprived him of his sense of taste. He was lucky – the damage could have left him in a wheelchair.

    Nerve Damage – claiming compensation

If the accident which caused the nerve damage was not the fault of the victim, if might be possible claim compensation. Usually the victim, who might be struggling to come to terms with the effects of the nerve damage, needs to focus on their own recovery and it is at that point that the services of an experienced personal injury compensation solicitor will prove invaluable.
